Mental Health in the workplace

 

Mental Health can manifest itself in a number of ways and the symptoms may not be as obvious as one may think. Most people, particularly men suffer in silence and of those who seek treatment in the form of counselling, many find this fails to alleviate one’s problems, and sometimes instead feel worse. Something I can testify from personal experience.

Misunderstandings, misconceptions, & preconceived ideas are prevalent amongst even ‘trained professionals’, let alone the Joe Public.

As with all professions, mental health is not impervious to outside influence, with cost and profit being the key drivers. Thus, sadly, both public and private present their own conflict of interest, with many seeking support as an exercise of trial and error.

There is some interesting research, surrounding talking therapy and why specifically CBT (a form of therapy recommended through the NHS) can be counterintuitive.

Whether one experiences, anxiety, depression, paranoia or other disorders not mentioned, the symptoms and how this impacts one’s life rarely is confined to just outside the workplace.

For many, the workplace can be the very environment that exacerbates the challenges that one is dealing with.

IT’S EVERYONES RESPONSIBILITY

A dangerous attitude that can develop within a workplace with respect to mental health is a culture of apathy.'

You may have heard of the phrase ‘It’s not my problem, I’m alrite jack.

Aside from the false sense of security one may develop for oneself, the message translated to others, particularly those struggling themselves, is that your issues are not important and you are not worth my time.

Although people will rarely consciously think this, let alone say it, on an unconcious level, this is the message that what transmits.
