My Health Journey

‘Confined to my bed and constantly being rushed into hospital, I thought my health was beyond repair!’

We all need to be vigilant about our health and this became more important for me than I could ever have imagined. Looking back, things were going quite well for me, until all changed suddenly and unexpectedly. After a series of traumatic events, a mental breakdown ensued and in 2023 I experienced a grand mal seizure lasting 20 minutes. The consequence of this seizure were devastating and the impact still impacts me today.

That said, there have been some profound improvements and I attribute these to my journey with nutrition.

I always knew that food had a role in health but never understood its significance, particularly for my own health conditions. Advice and support from nutritional therapist Jane Hickey helped me to understand the connection between the brain and body.

Having since been diagnosed with CPTSD and also learning I am indicative of several ADHD typologies, has only exemplified the need to manage my nutritional intake.

Another revelation has been the learning how MY genes impact how MY body processes nutrition.

The impact of my grand mal seizure in 2023 alone took a lot out of me, not just physically, but mentally as well. Looking back, I think it was my body telling me you need to reset.

I had been battling suicide for a long time to the point I would wake up in the mornings wishing I was dead. A blessing from this seizure was that I did not have the capacity to focus on events that had contributed to my situation. Instead, I was just getting through each day, one day at a time. Basic things like eating were a struggle. With no appetite, I lost significant weight and had become so weak, that carrying a bag of groceries became an exhausting exercise. It would often feel as if my heart was giving up.

Unlike before my seizure where I wanted to die, I now found myself wanting to get well but thinking I was too far gone.

Health professionals had attempted new medications, only my body had been rejecting these efforts. With symptoms worsening such as now experiencing non-epileptic seizures. It was a struggle to pin point what was making things worse. There was a period of trial and error, meaning I was frequently rushed into hospital. This continued for several months.

Meeting Jane in 2024 had/has been a life changing experience. At that point, although I had improved somewhat, there had been times when I was so physically and emotionally exhausted, I often had to abruptly cut short new found hobbies such as singing and exercise, after less than just 10 minutes!

Janes recommendations through a personalised support plan have had a profound impact on my life where I can say it has been nothing short of life changing!

I genuinely believed I was beyond repair but I’ve learned in time that no matter what your health is situation is at present, it can improve and in my case exceed one’s expectations.

Now I have come so far, my goal is to continue to grow!

To summarise, where I previously lived in anguish, I now live with hope.

Through my health journey, I can attest the psalmist words;

‘In an awe-inspiring way I am wonderfully made.’ - Psalms 139:14
